Red Dead Redemption 2

Warning

This blog may contain minimal spoilers. I try to minimize the specific plots mentioned but some are too shining that I feel like it is not suitable not to include them in this review. I will keep them vague though.

Graphics

The peak of rasterization lighting game. Though it is released in 2018, its graphics are still extremely competitive in 2026 with its great optimization.

On my NVIDIA RTX 4060 + AMD R5 5600 and it can run middle high graphics at 2K 55fps with DLSS on. Vulkan pipeline seems to work better than DX12.

THe original lighting is already good enough. There are some ReShade mods on Nexus that make the game brighter and more saturated, though personally I prefer the vanilla.

There really isn't much doubt on RDR2's graphics. True state-of-art.

Gameplay

Though some do not like the low-paced gameplay, I actually enjoy the slow West world that Rockstar has depicted. You will find almost every widget and component of the game is interactive with fine animations. Though some can be annoying sometimes, such as the animation of looting which takes around 7 seconds, it inherently makes you feel like you are Arthur Morgan yourself.

The pace of the game accelerates significantly from Chapter 4. You can feel that plots are more intensive and the gang is changing swiftly. Guarmar Island is really a great pity as it is un-finished and lots of areas are restricted, though you can modded it using monsieurGremlin's Immersive Guarma.

There really aren't much to do in New Austin and Mexico, the latter one is not even open to access. The random events occur significantly less frequently after the mainline ends. No tasks but collecting widgets exist. There aren't much to "play", and Rockstar could have added endless Bounty Hunter missions and purchasable properties. These ideas have already been implemented by Shtivi's Bounty Hunting and 7oew's Buyable Properties.

Story

GOAT story with immersing plot-telling techniques. I kinda like the way the game only has sad endings, for that is how "redemption" can be ultimately achieved for the character. I feel really sad for the ending for weeks after playing the game.

The story is so immersive that I can literally memorize all names of the gangsters. It always makes you think of "What will be the story even before? What will RDR3 talk about?"

In short, the story will replace your life.

Others

It should have won the TGA Best Game award, and I geunienly think so.

Conclusion: 10/10

GOAT.

"Arthur. Oh, Arthur."

"I guess... I'm afraid...'"

"Get the hell out of here and be a goddamn man."
